If i paid my rent ahead but now need to move, can i get my money back?

This is my 2nd year staying where i reside. The first year i signed a rental agreement, however, when the new year arrived i have not signed another agreement. I usually pay my rent ahead during tax time because i am not financially able to pay month to month right now. Because of my financial struggle i have decided to move in with a friend and roommate for a while to save money. I have paid my rent up until August and when i asked if i could get the money back, my rent owner said that i could not be reimbursed for it because they don't keep the money. I asked for a copy of my original lease and they still haven't givien it to me. What i find odd is that when i asked for the copy of my lease, he said that he was looking into whether or not i can get the money back or not because he didn't want to do anything wrong. It has been two weeks now and they haven't called me back yet. I told them i was trying to be out by the end of this month. I prepaid for three more months. Am i entitled to get my money back? I'm not worried about the deposit money. I just want my rent money back! I am not breaking any lease agreement cause this is my second year there and there was no renewal of the contract when the new year came in.
