Refund a security deposit?

My boyfriend and I had intentions of signing a lease with an apartment we found. We made the security deposit last week and were all set to sign a lease this coming weekend. However due to unforeseen circumstances regarding my school we won't be able to. Since we haven't signed a lease or anything are we eligible for a full refund? Thank you in advance for the help!
